Test automation success relies on 3 elements: A. The right tool, B. The right approach, C. The right people. Absence or Inactivity of one or more of this three will prevent of the Test Automation project to be successful and even fail.
Let’s consider the following aspects (this is only a partial list. There are probably more aspects I can't think of at the moment):
- Recognition of GUI objects
many tools are unable to support unique GUI objects
- Compliance with your test automation approach,
for example if you are working with Keyword Driven Testing and would like your manual testers to plan and execute the test automation, you need to verify that the tool supports such strategy.
- Stability, create a script and run it in a loop for 24 hours and on different PCs and platforms. Measure how many time the script changes.
- Level of Support - both internally in the tool (help), documentation provided and support center
