Tool Summary

eggPlant Performance is a load and performance testing tool consisting of three main components: Studio, Test Controller, and Analyzer.

  • Studio is used to create the different components of a load test (including scripts, test data, test definitions, and monitoring targets).
  • Test Controller is used subsequently to execute the tests and monitor them during runtime.
  • Analyzer is then used to view completed test runs and their results, as well as generate a wide variety of charts and tables to analyze the data.

eggPlant Performance supports a variety of virtual user types for different automation options, depending on the performance or load testing requirements and objectives.

  • Web HTPP/S: For protocol-level web scripting
  • Rich clients/UI-based: This includes Citrix VUs (for automating any desktop app published over Citrix), eggPlant Functional VUs (for integration with TestPlant’s functional UI testing tool), WinDriver VUs(for driving the interface of any Windows-based rich client application through a combination of object- and image-based approaches), Selenium VUs (for automating the user experience of browsers).
  • TCP/UDP: For recording network traffic

Virtual User Types

  • Web, .NET. HTTP level virtual user for testing web applications, mobile web applications, and web services.
  • Web, Java. HTTP-level virtual user for testing web applications, mobile web applications, and web services.
  • Application, eggPlant Functional. GUI-level virtual user for automating any application, any browser, on any platform, using any technology from mobile devices to mainframes.
  • Application, Selenium. GUI-level virtual user for automating web applications with complex client-side scripting that is difficult to simulate at the network level.
  • Application, Citrix. Citrix virtual user that automates the GUI of Citrix-hosted application instances.
  • Base, IP. IP-level virtual user that can test any networked application with the greatest level of flexibility. Appropriate for message-based systems and non-HTTP protocols.
  • Base, .NET. API-level virtual user for driving .NET APIs.
  • Base, Java. API-level virtual user for driving Java APIs.

 

Few Comments from the net:

Eggplant has been used for performance testing of both desktop and web-based (client/server) applications. The Eggplant approach to testing is to interact with the application through the actual user interface, "seeing" elements of the interface when they are displayed, and performing mouse and keyboard actions. This makes Eggplant a very realistic "virtual user", interacting with the software almost exactly like a human user would -- although somewhat faster! (See http://www.redstonesoftware.com/home/loadtesting.html for more on the Eggplant approach.)

Most other load test solutions, by contrast, use the term "virtual user" to mean a stream of data sent directly to the application server by the tool, bypassing the user interface. This lets them put a heavy load on the server, but in a less realistic fashion.

Depending on the type of results you are looking for, and the load level you want to simulate, you may find one or the other approach to be preferable. Or you might want to consider a hybrid approach, weighing down the server with a simulated load tool, and simultaneously using Eggplant to realistically measure the application's responsiveness from the user's point of view.
