  1. SAAS
    1. Software As A Service, is a software delivery model in which software and its associated data are hosted centrally.
  2. Sanity testing / Smoke testing
    1. An initial testing effort to determine if a new sw version is performing well enough to start for a major software testing. For example, if the new software is crashing frequently or corrupting databases then it is not a good idea to start testing before all these problems are solved first.    
  3. SBTM
    1. Session-based testing method (SBTM) is a software test method that aims to combine accountability and exploratory testing to provide rapid defect discovery, creative on-the-fly test design, management control and metrics reporting. The method can also be used in conjunction with Scenario testing.
  4. Scalability Testing
    1. Is a non-functional test type, which measure the program capability to scale up or scale out, in terms of any of its non-functional capability like: user load supported, the number of transactions, the data volume etc. Performance, scalability and Reliability are usually considered together by software quality analysts.
  5. Scenarios
    1. hypothetical stories to help the tester work through a complex problem or test system and it covers a number of steps (test cases).
  6. Scenario testing
    1. A software testing activity that uses scenarios: hypothetical stories to help the tester work through a complex problem or test system. The ideal scenario test is a credible, complex, compelling or motivating story the outcome of which is easy to evaluate. These tests are usually different from test cases in that test cases are single steps whereas scenarios cover a number of steps.
  7. Scripted testing
    1. Test execution carried out by following a previously documented sequence of tests.
  8. Security testing
    1. Testing to determine the security of the software product. Testing to determine how well the system protects itself against unauthorized internal or external access and intentional damage. May require sophisticated testing techniques.
    2. Security testing is a process intended to reveal flaws in the security mechanisms of an information system that protect data and maintain functionality as intended. Due to the logical limitations of security testing, passing security testing is not an indication that no flaws exist or that the system adequately satisfies the security requirements.
    3. Typical security requirements may include specific elements of confidentiality, integrity, authentication, availability, authorization and non-repudiation. Actual security requirements tested depend on the security requirements implemented by the system. Security testing as a term has a number of different meanings and can be completed in a number of different ways. As such a Security Taxonomy helps us to understand these different approaches and meanings by providing a base level to work from.
  9. Semi-automated testing
    1. Tests which begin and/or end with the interfaces of the systems to be tested for manual connect/register/etc.
  10. SEO testing
    1. Inspection of requirements for internal and external website optimization.
  11. SEPA
    1. The Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) is a payment-integration initiative of the European Union for simplification of bank transfers denominated in euro. As of March 2012, SEPA consists of the 28 EU member states, the four members of the EFTA(Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland) and Monaco.
  12. Service Virtualization
    1. service virtualization is a method to emulate the behavior of specific components in heterogeneous component-based applications such as API-driven applications, cloud-based applications and service-oriented architectures. It is used to provide software development and QA/testing teams access to dependent system components that are needed to exercise an application under test (AUT), but are unavailable or difficult-to-access for development and testing purposes. With the behavior of the dependent components "virtualized," testing and development can proceed without accessing the actual live components. Service virtualization is recognized by vendors, industry analysts, and industry publications as being different than mocking. (Wikipedia)
  13. Simulation
    1. The representation of selected behavioral characteristics of one physical or abstract system by another system.
  14. Simulator
    1. A device, computer program or system used during testing, which behaves or operates like a given system when provided with a set of controlled inputs. See also emulator.
  15. SIP Connection
    1. SIP - Session Initiation Protocol connection is a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) service offered by many ITSPs (Internet telephony service providers) that connects a company's PBX (private branch exchange) telephone system to the PSTN (public switched telephone network) via the internet. Using a SIP connection may simplify administration for the organization as the SIP connection typically uses the same Internet access that is used for data. SIP encryption become more popular due to the increasing concerns about security of calls that run over the public Internet, and because VPN is not an option for most service providers, most service providers that offer secure SIP connections use TLS and SRTP for encrypting the traffic. The keys for SRTP are exchanged using RFC 4568.
  16. Six Sigma
    1. A business management strategy, originally developed by Motorola in 1986. It seeks to improve the quality of process outputs by identifying and removing the causes of defects (errors) and minimizing variability in manufacturing and business processes. It uses a set of quality management methods, including statistical methods, and creates a special infrastructure of people within the organization ("Black Belts", "Green Belts", etc.) who are experts in these methods. Each Six Sigma project carried out within an organization follows a defined sequence of steps and has quantified financial targets (cost reduction and/or profit increase). 
  17. Smoke test
    1. A subset of all defined/planned test cases that cover the main functionality of a component or system, to ascertaining that the most crucial functions of a program work, but not bothering with finer details. A daily build and smoke test is among industry best practices.
  18. SMPP
    1. Short Message Peer-to-Peer, telecommunications industry protocol for exchanging SMS messages between SMS peer entities such as short message service centers and/or External Short Messaging EntitiesThe protocol is based on pairs of request/response PDUs (protocol data units, or packets) exchanged over OSI layer 4 (TCP session or X.25 SVC3) connections. 
  19. SMS
    1. Short Message Service,  is a text messaging service component of phone, web, or mobile communication systems, using standardized communications protocols that allow the exchange of short text messages between fixed line or mobile phone devices.
  20. SMTP
    1. Simple Mail Transfer Protocol  is an Internet standard for electronic mail (e-mail) transmission across Internet Protocol (IP) networks. SMTP uses TCP port 25. The protocol for new submissions (MSA) is effectively the same as SMTP, but it uses port 587 instead. SMTP connections secured by SSL are known by the shorthand SMTPSElectronic mail servers and other mail transfer agents use SMTP to send and receive mail messages, but user-level client mail applications typically only use SMTP for sending messages to a mail server for relaying. For receiving messages, client applications usually use either the Post Office Protocol (POP) or the Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) 
  21. SOA Testing
    1. Testing the Service Orientated Architectures, A service-oriented architecture (SOA) is an architectural pattern in computer software design in which application components provide services to other components via a communications protocol, typically over a network. The principles of service-orientation are independent of any vendor, product or technology. A service is a self-contained unit of functionality, such as retrieving an online bank statement.  By that definition, a service is an operation that may be discretely invoked. However, in the Web Services Description Language (WSDL), a service is an interface definition that may list several discrete services/operations. And elsewhere, the term service is used for a component that is encapsulated behind an interface. This widespread ambiguity is reflected in what follows. 
    2. Services can be combined to provide the functionality of a large software application. SOA makes it easier for software components on computers connected over a network to cooperate. Every computer can run any number of services, and each service is built in a way that ensures that the service can exchange information with any other service in the network without human interaction and without the need to make changes to the underlying program itself.
  22. Software
    1. Computer programs, procedures, and possibly associated documentation and data pertaining to the operation of a computer system.
  23. Software Lifecycle
    1. The period of time that begins when a software product is conceived and ends when the software is no longer available for use. The software lifecycle typically includes a concept phase, requirements phase, design phase, implementation phase, test phase, installation and checkout phase, operation and maintenance phase, and sometimes, retirement phase. Note these phases may overlap or be performed iterative.
  24. Software Quality
    1. The totality of functionality and features of a software product that bear on its ability to satisfy stated or implied needs.
  25. Software Testing
    1. An investigation conducted to provide stakeholders with information about the quality of the product or service under test. Software testing is oriented to "detection". It's examining a system or an application under controlled conditions. It's intentionally making things go wrong when they should not and things happen when they should not.
  26. Software Verification
    1. preventing mechanism to detect possible failures before the testing begin. It involves reviews, meetings, evaluating documents, plans, code, inspections, specifications etc.
  27. Software Validation
    1. A Validation process which occurs after verification and it's the actual testing to find defects against the functionality or the specifications.
  28. Specification
    1. A document that specifies, ideally in a complete, precise and verifiable manner, the requirements, design, behavior, or other characteristics of a component or system, and, often, the procedures for determining whether these provisions have been satisfied.
  29. Static code analysis
    1. Facilitates regulatory compliance (FDA, PCI, etc.). Ensures that the code meets uniform expectations around security, reliability, performance, and maintainability. Eliminates entire classes of programming errors by establishing preventive coding conventions.
  30. Stress testing
    1. A type of performance testing conducted to evaluate a system or component at or beyond the limits of its anticipated or specified work loads, or with reduced availability of resources such as access to memory or servers. See also performance testing, load testing.
  31. System
    1. A collection of components organized to accomplish a specific function or set of functions.
  32. System testing
    1. Black box type testing that is based on overall requirements specifications. Covers all combined parts of a system.  
  33. SWIFT
    1. The Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) provides a network that enables financial institutions worldwide to send and receive information about financial transactions in a secure, standardized and reliable environment.
